Greta Thunberg dismisses COP26 pact: ‘The real work continues outside these halls’

Greta Thunberg criticized the final deal reached by global leaders at the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, on Saturday, saying “the real work continues outside these halls.”

The 18-year-old posted her criticism of the United Nations climate summit on Twitter shortly after the countries in attendance agreed to a final pact after two weeks of negotiations.

“The COP26 is over. Here’s a brief summary: Blah, Blah, Blah,” she wrote. “But the real work continues outside these halls. And we will never give up, ever.”

Countries struck a climate deal that they say will cut carbon dioxide emissions to 45 percent of 2010 recorded levels by 2030. The agreement also explicitly mentions coal and fossil fuels for the first time, though its language on that front was weakened at the last minute.

Developed nations further agreed to at least double commitments to financially assist developing countries in meeting climate goals.

Thunberg has previously criticized the summit for not going far enough. On Nov. 5, she joined a large protest outside the conference that called on world leaders to make real changes to curb emissions and cut out fossil fuels. She has also called for specific reforms, including for banks to stop funding  climate “destruction.”

“Unless we achieve immediate, drastic, unprecedented, annual emission cuts at the source then that means we’re failing when it comes to this climate crisis,” the Swedish activist tweeted Sunday. “‘Small steps in the right direction,’ ‘making some progress’ or ‘winning slowly’ equals losing.”
