Greta Thunberg joins youth activists protesting in Glasgow

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg joined other youth activists protesting in Glasgow, where the COP26 climate summit is taking place.

Thunberg took to the streets of Glasgow with other activists on Friday while world leaders are meeting at the climate summit to set goals to combat climate change, The New York Times reported.

The protest was one of the largest that have occurred during the weeklong summit.

Protesters marched through the streets with signs and flags demanding action on climate change from world leaders and companies.

Thunberg has been one of the most influential youth climate activists since 2018 and will be delivering a speech Friday.

During the summit, she has called for multiple climate reforms including for banks to stop funding climate “destruction.”

However, she has received some pushback, with Rwanda’s environment minister telling Politico some youth activists are “just complaining just for complaining.”

The criticism comes as Thunberg and other groups have railed against trading carbon credits that are seen as crucial for lower income countries.

“Do they propose another solution?” Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya told the outlet. “The leaves of the trees will fix the carbon, that’s scientific.”

“If we are talking about being climate-change resilient, it will not come from the heavens; we have to work for it. We have to invest,” she added. “We cannot say we have [the] excuse of just sitting and waiting for the Samaritan to come and save us.”
