Isiah Brown discharged from hospital after being shot by Virginia police, attorney says

Isiah Brown has been released from the hospital after being shot by Virginia police last month, his attorney said.

David Haynes of the Cochran Firm, who is representing Brown, said in an emailed statement that Brown was discharged from the hospital Tuesday and will continue his rehabilitation at home.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office released footage of the shooting last month as well as audio of the 911 call leading up to it.

Brown called 911 in the early morning of April 21 because of a dispute with his brother over car keys. During the call, Brown told his brother to “give me the gun” and threatened to kill him.

Several minutes into the call, Brown said he was walking down the road with his house phone and that he did not have a gun on him.

But in released footage, an officer demands to see Brown’s hands and tells him to drop a gun before firing shots.

Brown was transported to a hospital in Fredericksburg.

Haynes said Wednesday that doctors found eight bullets in Brown’s body. There were also two exit wounds.

The deputy involved was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation from the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

Haynes filed a Virginia Freedom of Information Act request earlier this month asking for copies of the dispatch center’s communications as well as the name of the deputy who shot Brown.

The sheriff’s office hasn’t released the records, Haynes said, adding that follow-up requests are being submitted “at this time.”

Brown’s family has started a GoFundMe to help offset the medical costs incurred from the incident.
