Attorneys for Isaiah Brown file for release of tapes between dispatcher, deputy in shooting

Attorneys for Isaiah Brown, a Black man who was shot by a police officer in Virginia, have filed for the release of tapes between the police officer and dispatcher who responded to the 911 call that led to him being shot in late April.

David Haynes of The Cochran Firm, who is representing Brown, filed a Virginia Freedom of Information Act request Monday asking for a full copy of the dispatch center’s communications with the deputy between midnight and 3 a.m. on April 21, before the shooting.

He also asked for any footage or audio of the incident between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. that hasn’t already been released.

In addition to the communications, Haynes also requested the full name of the deputy who shot Brown, as well as any notes or memorandums related to his encounter with Brown.

Brown, 32, was shot by the same officer who had just given him a ride home after his car broke down.

Brown called 911 because his brother wouldn’t give him his car keys, and later said he was going to kill his brother, according to audio of the 911 call released a few days later.

When the officer arrived, the officer demanded to see Brown’s hands and called for him to drop a gun. However, he told the dispatcher that he was walking down the road with his house phone and did not have a gun.

Video of the incident shows the officer screaming “stop” before firing at least six shots. Brown was shot at 3:18 a.m.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations. The officer is on administrative leave pending the investigation.

Brown was transferred to a hospital, where he is currently in critical condition.

Brown’s family established a GoFundMe to help offset expenses associated with his hospitalization, which has raised $835 of its $10,000 goal as of Tuesday afternoon.
