‘Straight pride’ group members arrested in Capitol breach

Two people affiliated with a “straight pride” group were arrested in Massachusetts on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the breach of the Capitol earlier this month.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) in a press release announced the arrest of Mark Sahady and Suzanne Ianni. Both have been charged with entering or remaining in a restricted building without lawful authority and one count of disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Most of those involved in the riot who have been arrested so far have been charged with similar counts of unlawfully entering a restricted building. The individuals face up to 1 year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. The separate charge of disorderly conduct carries a potential for six months in prison and $5,000 fine.

Both Sahady and Ianni were expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Boston on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the DOJ, Sahady is the vice president of the group called Super Happy Fun America, which claims to advocate for “straight rights.” Ianni is also associated with the group and allegedly organized buses for the organization to take to Washington, D.C.

Prosecutors said that a Twitter account linked to Super Happy Fun America posted a photo that apparently showed Sahady and Ianni on a bus with the caption “Bus 1 of 11 coming to Washington DC. See you there!”

The organization previously hosted a “Straight Pride Parade” in Boston that garnered national attention. The group’s website states that it “advocates on behalf of the straight community,” with the organization’s president asserting that “straight people are an oppressed majority.”
