California reports daily record of more than 50,000 coronavirus cases, nearly 400 deaths

California broke its statewide records for both coronavirus cases reported and deaths reported in a single day on Wednesday.

The state reported 51,724 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of 42,088 cases, which was just set on Monday, according to a Los Angeles Times tally.

California also reported 393 COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday, breaking the previous record of 295 deaths, which was set on Tuesday.

California has now reported a total of 1.7 million coronavirus cases and 21,887 COVID-19 fatalities.

As of Tuesday, 14,939 people in California were hospitalized with coronavirus infections, according to the Times.

Los Angeles County on Wednesday broke its countywide record for coronavirus cases, reporting 22,469 cases. The previous record had been set on Friday, with 13,507 cases reported.

Records in reported cases were also broken in San Bernardino County, Fresno County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco and San Benito County, according to the newspaper.

State officials on Wednesday reported 0 percent availability of licensed intensive care unit beds in the San Joaquin Valley and 0.5 percent availability in Southern California, according to the Times.
