Dwayne Johnson teases presidential bid after surprise poll

The actor Dwayne Johnson teased a potential bid for president in an upcoming interview on NBC News’ Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist.

A poll released from the research platform Piplsay last week found that 45 percent of Americans expressed support for Hollywood stars like Johnson and Matthew McConaughey pursuing political careers.

In a preview for an upcoming interview on Sunday, Geist asked Johnson if he was interested in running for office, noting that not many things garner as much support as he does.

“So I do have that goal to unite our country. And I also feel that if this is what the people want then I will do that,” Johnson said. “But I am passionate about making sure that our country is united. Because a united country, as we know, is its strongest and I want to see that for our country.”

Johnson previously gave a similar remark in February saying a presidential bid by him “would be up to the people.”

“So I would wait, and I would listen. I would have my finger on the pulse, my ear to the ground,” he said in a USA Today interview.

In his new semi-biographical NBC sitcom “Young Rock,” Johnson is shown running for president in the near future.

Politically, Johnson has engaged with both sides of the aisle, speaking at the Republican National Convention in 2000 and endorsing then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden in 2020. He has said in the past that he is a registered independent.
