Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) said Monday that President Trump’s trip to Paris over the weekend was a “national embarrassment.”
“Trump’s European Vacation was as bad as the movie. He wimped out of honoring our fallen troops because of a misting. He moped around in his hotel room and insulted fire victims. And he was scorched by the French President. This is not winning. This is a national embarrassment,” Swalwell wrote on Twitter.
Swalwell was referencing Trump’s decision not to visit a World War I memorial in the northern part of France on Saturday. Trump was scheduled to visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau, but the White House said it canceled the event because of “scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather.”
The White House then said on Monday that Trump didn’t go to the cemetery because he thought the motorcade would be disruptive.
Trump on Saturday also tweeted about the wildfires that are burning across California. He blamed the fires on what he described as “poor” forest management.
“There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor. Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
“Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!” he added.
