Former President Obama congratulated President-elect Joe Biden as he prepares to be inaugurated Wednesday.

“Congratulations to my friend, President @JoeBiden,” Obama tweeted to his former vice president on Wednesday morning. “This is your time.”

Former first lady Michelle Obama also congratulated Biden in an Instagram post.

“Today is the day. After a disturbing era of chaos and division, we are entering the next chapter of American leadership with the inauguration of @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris,” she said. “Right now, I’m feeling more than just relief at putting the past four years behind us. I’m feeling genuinely hopeful for what’s to come.”

Michelle Obama called Biden and Harris “the kind of leaders our nation deserves—decent, hardworking people who reflect the best of our values. Most of all, they’re guided by empathy, honesty, and a willingness to put the needs of our country before their own.”

Both Obamas campaigned for Biden and Harris last year, criticizing President Trump and calling Biden and Harris the right choice to bring the country together at a time of national crisis.

“They’re determined to make life better for all Americans, and I know they will bring us back the stability that has been sorely lacking through what has been a devastating pandemic,” Michelle Obama said.

Biden will be sworn in at noon on Wednesday following his victory in the November election. Obama, along with former Presidents George W. Bush and Clinton, will attend a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery with Biden before heading to Capitol Hill for the inaugural festivities.

Wednesday’s inauguration will feature a smaller crowd, largely virtual proceedings and no evening ball due to ongoing public health concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.
