Conway’s husband: Trump Foundation allegations should be referred to US attorney’s office

George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, said allegations that the Donald J. Trump Foundation may have violated campaign finance laws should be referred to the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan.

He was responding to a New York Times piece in which experts said it was likely that the Trump Foundation and President Trump’s campaign violated federal campaign finance laws.

The New York attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit against the president and his foundation last week, alleging that Trump and his charity violated federal and state laws.

The lawsuit includes allegations that the Trump campaign directed how donations held by the Trump Foundation should be distributed, and that the charity made an unreported $2.8 million in-kind donation to the campaign.

The attorney general’s office also sent a pair of referral letters to the Federal Election Commission and the IRS, saying the charity may have violated federal election and tax laws.

The referral letters came as New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood’s (D) office filed a lawsuit against the foundation, seeking its dissolution.

Conway has appeared to use Twitter to criticize Trump and his administration in the past — last month he shared tweets knocking the president for a Memorial Day tweet touting his achievements.
