The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday approved new sanctions against North Korea, a response to Pyongyang’s recent nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests, which were against U.N. rules.

The new sanctions include inspecting cargo entering and leaving North Korea by land, sea or air and banning the trade of small arms.

The sanctions were the toughest against Pyongyang in two decades.

“Today, the international community, speaking with one voice, has sent Pyongyang a simple message: North Korea must abandon these dangerous programs and choose a better path for its people,” President Obama said in a statement.
