Tiger Woods announces first golf tournament since accident

Tiger Woods announced on Tuesday that he would be competing with his son Charlie in his first tournament since a rollover car accident left him with leg and back injuries earlier in February.

“Although it’s been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie. I’m playing as a Dad and couldn’t be more excited and proud,” Woods tweeted.

The PNC Championship congratulated Woods following the announcement.

“Welcome back, @TigerWoods. The 15-time major champion will return to competitive golf with his son Charlie at next week’s #PNCchampionship. #CelebrateFamily,” the PNC Championship tweeted.

The PGA Tour, which organizes the unofficial event played by duos of pro golfers and a member of their family, noted that it had been 288 days since Woods had been involved in a one-car crash in California. 

The pro golfer, who had been on his way to Rolling Hills Country Club located less than 30 miles south of Los Angeles, was involved in a rollover accident after hitting a median on the street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, ESPN reported. The incident left him with major leg and back injuries.

Woods had been asked last month during his first press conference since the incident if he could foresee himself playing competitively again.

“As far as playing at the Tour level, I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” the golfer answered.

However, he did note that his leg would never be in the same condition again.

“I don’t foresee this leg ever being what it used to be,” Woods said.
