Garth Brooks at inauguration calls on Americans to sing ‘Amazing Grace’ together

Garth Brooks shared a message of togetherness at President Biden’s inauguration, asking the country to join him in singing “Amazing Grace” so Americans can be “as one, united.”

The country music star performed an abbreviated, a cappella rendition of the hymn on Wednesday.

Wearing a black ensemble with a cowboy hat and boots, Brooks requested that the inaugural audience sing a verse of the song along with him.

“Not just the people here,” Brooks said, “but the people at home, at work. As one, united.”

Following his performance, Brooks doled out hugs to many political figures in the crowd, including former President Clinton, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former first lady Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush.

Brooks, 58, said in remarks to reporters ahead of the inauguration, “This is not a political statement.”

“This is a statement of unity,” the entertainer said, noting he has performed for nearly every commander in chief since President Carter.
