Secret Service records confirm investigation into John Mulaney over Caesar assassination joke

The U.S. Secret Service’s records confirm that the agency launched an investigation into comedian John Mulaney after he made a joke perceived as a possible threat to President Trump during his opening monologue in an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” last February.

“Another thing that happened under Julius Caesar, he was such a powerful maniac that all the senators grabbed knives, and they stabbed him to death. That would be an interesting thing if we brought that back now,” Mulaney said at the time.

According to records obtained by The Associated Press and BuzzFeed News this week, the Secret Service reached out to NBC following the performance, though the bureau did not interview Mulaney directly.

The report noted other parts of the comedian’s monologue, including him asking his lawyer if the joke was appropriate.

“I asked my lawyer if I could make that joke, he said, let me call another lawyer, and that lawyer said yes. I don’t dwell on politics, but I dislike the Founding Fathers immensely,” Mulaney said. “I hate when people are like, God has never created such a great group of men than the Founding Fathers. Yeah, the ’92 Bulls. … That’s a perfect metaphor for the United States. When I was a boy, the United States was like Michael Jordan in 1992. Now the United States [is] like Michael Jordan now.”

The file also made note that the “SNL” host did not directly threaten Trump.

Mulaney joked about the situation during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in December claiming that he had been informed about the investigation two days after his performance.

“Am I stoked that there’s a file open on me? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it at the moment? Not so much,” he said at the time.

Mulaney was a frequent critic of Trump’s during his time in office, comparing the former “Apprentice” host being in the White House to “a horse loose in a hospital.”
