Washington Football Team player tests positive

The Washington Football Team announced Tuesday that one of its players tested positive for COVID-19, news that comes just hours after the team announced it would play this Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals without fans due to rising cases in the area.

“Last night, we were made aware that a Washington player tested positive for COVID-19,” the team said in a statement.

The statement added that the unnamed player “immediately self-isolated,” and proper contact tracing was evaluated. All other team members have been told to quarantine.

“At this time, the game against Cincinnati is still on schedule,” a spokesperson for the team told The Hill, adding the organization is receiving “guidance from the NFL’s Chief Medical Officer.”

The team previously said it is working in conjunction with health officials’ guidance across the Washington metro region and that this weekend’s game at its Maryland stadium will be played before empty stands.

The Maryland Department of Health reported 4,160 new coronavirus cases on Monday, and the statewide positivity rate registered at 6.45 percent for its seven-day average.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) released a statement via Twitter regarding the evolving COVID-19 concerns in his state Monday, advising residents to continue adhering to pandemic measures such as washing hands frequently, wearing a mask and avoiding gatherings.
