‘SNL’ congratulates Alabama’s newest senator: ‘Not Roy Moore’

“Saturday Night Live” took on the Alabama Senate special election in its “Weekend Update” segment, mocking Republican Roy Moore after his stunning loss to Democratic opponent Doug Jones.

“Congratulations to Alabama’s newest Senator — not Roy Moore,” anchor Colin Jost said. “Doug Jones has become the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Alabama in over 20 years. Said Roy Moore: ‘gross, over 20 years?’ ”

Jost also mocked President Trump’s first tweet following the election, in which he congratulated Jones and said “the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!”

{mosads}“That’s it?” Jost asked. “You just went all in for an accused pedophile and when he lost, [you’re] just like, ‘well, we had fun!’ ”

“He could be removed from office tonight and tweet: ‘Congratulations to Robert Mueller on a great investigation. Had a fun time being president. Catch you on the flippity-flop! #DietCokeTime,’ ” Jost continued.

Moore was accused of sexual misconduct last month by multiple women, including one woman who said Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 and he was 32.

The Alabama Republican denied the allegations and refused calls from top Republicans to exit the race.

Trump offered a full-throated endorsement of Moore in the closing weeks of the campaign, holding a Florida rally near the Alabama border in which he supported Moore and recording a robocall for him in the final days of the election.

Moore has so far refused to concede the race to Jones, saying he is waiting on a final vote count from the Alabama secretary of State and urging supporters to donate to an “election integrity fund.”

Jones’s victory deals a blow to Trump and Republicans, who now only have 51 members in the Senate.
