Black family in Texas say cars set on fire, house vandalized with ‘Trump 2020’ sign

Police in Dallas, Texas, are investigating after a local Black family saw their vehicles set aflame and their home and “Black Lives Matter” sign vandalized in an incident the family says is a hate crime.

The crime occurred last week around midnight on Wednesday, family members told NBC News. As part of the crime, Jayla Gipson told the network that “Trump 2020” was also spray-painted on their garage door.

Gibson, 36, told the news network she believes the incident came in response to the family putting up a “Black Lives Matter” sign outside their home in Little Elm during the week of Thanksgiving.

Until then, Gibson, who said her family has lived at the residence since 2017, hadn’t seen anything like this happen.

“It’s horrible. Had that sign not been in my yard, I don’t think this would have ever been an incident for us,” she said.

“It’s definitely a hate crime,” she also told the outlet. “‘Trump 2020’ was sprayed on our garage, our ‘Black Lives Matter’ sign was spray painted, and our cars were engulfed in flames.”

In pictures obtained by the outlet from Gibson’s family, the two cars outside of their garage appeared torched in the front. The front windows of both vehicles also appeared to be shattered in the photos.

Gibson told NBC News that her 21-year-old son had been at the home in the restroom at the time of the incident and was first to discover the fire outside. Her daughter, who is 12, had also been home at the time sleeping.

Authorities told the network they are still investigating the incident and haven’t determined whether it is a hate crime yet.

So far, an online fundraiser set up for the family has raised over $9,300 as of Thursday afternoon.
