Power: Trump wrong to continue supporting Saudi-led coalition in Yemen

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.) Samantha Power ripped the Trump administration on Sunday for supporting the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, saying it has contributed to a humanitarian crisis.

“The US is right to press for action to stop Iranian smuggling to Houthi in #Yemen war, but wrong (as were we in last admin) to keep supporting Saudi-led coalition as it kills civilians w/ impunity & blocks medicine/food/fuel supplies in face of looming famine,” Power tweeted.

Power pointed to a report that 10 women were killed in a Saudi-led airstrike on a wedding procession near Yemen’s capital.

Power’s tweet comes after current U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley last Thursday revealed what she said was “undeniable evidence” of Iranian weapons supplied to Yemeni rebels in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

{mosads}“As you know, we do not often declassify this type of military equipment recovered from these attacks, but today we are taking an extraordinary step of presenting it here in an open setting,” Haley said.

“We did this for a single urgent purpose: Because the Iranian regime cannot be allowed to engage in its lawless behavior any longer,” she continued.

Experts have generally come to the agreement that Iran is supplying weapons to the Houthi rebels and the Trump administration has taken a hard line against Tehran.

However, the Saudi-led coalition has come under fire due to what many call human rights violations toward innocent Yemeni civilians in the conflict.
