Pro-Clinton group sends Trump-style hats to GOP candidates

A super-PAC supporting Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s campaign is sending its own Donald Trump-style hats to GOP candidates.

Correct the Record said Monday it has mailed the hats emblazoned with the GOP front-runner’s “Make America Great Again” slogan to seven Republican contenders. Beneath each logo, the hats include individualized phrases tweaking the candidates for comments they have made.

{mosads}For example, the hat sent to Ben Carson includes “no Muslim presidents,” a reference to remarks the retired neurosurgeon made in September on the potential for Muslims in the White House, while Sen. Ted Cruz’s (Texas) hat says “religious tests,” a reference to debate over Syrian refugees.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s hat instructs followers to “wake up, smell the falafel,” former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s says to “prove your Christianity,” Sen. Marco Rubio’s (Fla.) says “close mosques and diners” and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s says “no orphan refugees.”

The pro-Clinton group also sent a hat to Trump himself, which says “ban all Muslims.” The real estate tycoon has repeatedly defended his proposal to temporarily bar Muslim foreign nationals from entering the United States amid stoked fears of international terrorism.

It’s the latest effort by outside groups to co-opt Trump’s trucker-style hat and slogan, which has been used by groups to promote LGBT activism, efforts to tackle income inequality and by opponents looking to generally needle the GOP front-runner.

“We hope these personalized hats will help the Republican hopefuls to show America their true colors before the debate [Tuesday night]. They all act like Trump; now they can look like him too,” Correct the Record’s Adrienne Watson said in a statement blasting Trump.
