Clinton: Trump ‘sold out’ to the gun lobby

Hillary Clinton on Monday night attacked Donald Trump’s close ties to the gun industry as she campaigned with gun control advocates former Rep. Gabby Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly.

{mosads}At a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Democratic presidential nominee renewed her call for comprehensive background checks and closing the gun show loophole. She also took aim at gun groups’ spending on ads for Trump, the GOP nominee.

“Donald Trump won’t stand up to the gun lobby. He sold out to them.” Clinton said on Monday. “I will stand up to them as president.”

“The gun lobby is spending more on ads to get Donald Trump elected more than any other group,” she added.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has spent millions backing Trump and earlier this month, announced that it will spend $6.5 million in its largest ad blitz.

Giffords and Kelly, who founded the gun control group Americans for Responsible Solutions, introduced the Democratic nominee on Monday night in the battleground state in their latest appearance with the former secretary of State on the campaign trail.

Giffords was shot in the head in 2011 while meeting with constituents in Tucson, Ariz.

Clinton’s push for gun control comes as CNN reported Monday that vulnerable Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) suggested at a private event over the weekend that gun owners put a “bullseye” on the Democratic nominee’s photo in a gun-related magazine.

Burr, who faces a tough reelection race against former state Rep. Deborah Ross (D), apologized for the “inappropriate” comment on Monday.

Clinton has been narrowly trailing Trump in the battleground state of Ohio in the final weeks of the election. The real estate mogul leads by 1.5 points in a RealClearPolitics polling average.
