Iowa group to deliver 6,000 copies of Constitution to Grassley’s offices
A group in Iowa plans to deliver more than 6,000 signatures and copies of the Constitution to the offices of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to protest his opposition to considering President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.
Members of the Why Courts Matter Iowa coalition on Thursday will have copies of Article Two, Section Two of the Constitution delivered to the senator’s offices to send Grassley a message: “Do your job.”
{mosads}The copies of the Constitution and the petition signatures will be brought to the six regional offices in Iowa at 1:30 p.m. Eastern, according to a Facebook page created about the effort.
The group is protesting Grassley’s stated plan to not hold hearings or a vote on a potential replacement for deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Many other Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, have said the nomination should not take place during an election year.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid suggested Wednesday that President Obama could tap a Supreme Court nominee in about a week.
The petition says that “Senator Chuck Grassley is threatening to obstruct any nominee to the Supreme Court made by President Obama, refusing to uphold his constitutional responsibility to advise and consent.”
It asks people to sign the petition and “tell Senator Grassley to do his job.”
The Why Courts Matter Iowa group has also been urging people to call Grassley’s office to tell him to “stop stonewalling the Constitution.”
