US, South Korea fire missiles into sea in response to North Korean launch

The United States and South Korea on Friday fired missiles into the waters off the South Korean coast in a show of force to North Korea.

“Eighth Army and Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) military personnel conducted a second combined training event to exercise assets countering North Korea’s missile launch/nuclear test on July 29,” the Eighth U.S. Army said in a statement.

The United States and South Korea held a similar test on July 5 in response to North Korea’s launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4.

The countries used the U.S. Army Tactical Missile System, a surface-to-surface missile, and South Korea’s Hyunmoo Missile II, a ballistic missile, in the test.

The two missiles were the same used in the July 5 “show of force” exercise.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford and U.S. Pacific Command head Adm. Harry Harris earlier on Friday called South Korean defense leaders to discuss military response options.

The North Korean missile, fired shortly before midnight in Japan, is the 14th missile test conducted by Pyongyang in 2017.
