CNN poll: Trump approval hits new low

President Trump’s approval rating is at its lowest point yet following indictments against some of his former campaign associates, according to a CNN poll released Monday.

Thirty-six percent approve of the way Trump is handling his job, down 1 point from his previous low. Meanwhile, 58 percent disapprove of his performance. The new numbers come nearly a year after his 2016 election victory.

There is also growing concern about the ongoing investigations into Russia’s election interference, the poll shows.

About 64 percent of respondents say the investigation into Russian influence is a serious matter that should be fully investigated. The number who see it is as an effort to discredit Trump’s presidency is down 6 points to 32 percent.

The poll comes one week after the first charges were filed in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s potential ties to Russia.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Richard Gates were indicted on charges of tax fraud and money laundering. The two pleaded not guilty and were placed under house arrest.

Former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his ties to Russian officials.

Despite Trump’s insistence that there has been no collusion, just 34 percent of Americans polled approve of the way he is dealing with the investigation, while 54 percent disapprove. The latter number is down 5 points from August.

The CNN poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday using a random sample of 1,021 adults. The margin of error is 3.6 percentage points.
