Clinton says she will rally women to defeat Trump
Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton said appealing to women voters will be an important part of her general election campaign against presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, who has already seen low support from female voters throughout his campaign.
In a telephone interview with the Los Angeles Times editorial board, Clinton called herself the best candidate for women and described how she would handle gender-based attacks from Trump.
{mosads}“I know these kinds of issues from the inside out, and I think bringing those kind of experiences to the White House, bringing it to the world stage, will be a big net plus for our country,” Clinton said.
Trump has faced fire for what some Clinton supporters call sexist attacks toward the former secretary of State, including saying she is only doing well in the Democratic primaries because of her gender and accusing her of playing the “woman’s card” to get votes.
“The whole idea of ‘playing the woman card,’ which he charged I was doing, and by extension other women were doing, has just lit a fire under so many women across the country,” Clinton said.
Clinton continued to say Trump’s conflicts with Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and former Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina will also sway women from voting for him.
“I think we are going to be pushing back and drawing the contrast whenever he does that,” Clinton said. “Because it’s just absolutely beyond the pale. He’s not going to get away with it, at least going forward.”
Trump has struggled with gaining the support of women throughout his campaign. A recent ABC/Washington Post poll showed 75 percent of women had an unfavorable view of the candidate.
The businessman has rejected notions that women don’t support him, insisting that he’s the best candidate for women’s issues.
“The media is so after me on women. Wow, this is a tough business,” Trump tweeted in March. “Nobody has more respect for women than Donald Trump!”
