Poll: Cruz, Trump neck and neck in Wisconsin

Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are neck and neck in the Wisconsin primary, according to a new poll.

Cruz leads, with 36 percent support, and Trump is right behind, at 35 percent, according to an Emerson College poll released Wednesday. John Kasich trails, with 19 percent.

{mosads}Many Republicans have called on Kasich to end his campaign out of fear that he could siphon votes away from Cruz.

While the poll does not make clear which candidate the Ohio governor’s supporters would choose if he dropped out, many gave Cruz a high marks.

At the same time, Gov. Scott Walker, himself a former GOP presidential candidate, continues to hint at a coming endorsement.

He highlighted Cruz as the best alternative to Trump in a Wednesday interview.

“If you’re someone who is uneasy with the front-runner, right now there’s really only one candidate. If you’re just looking at the numbers objectively, Sen. Cruz, Ted Cruz is the only one who’s got a chance, other than Donald Trump, to win the nomination,” Walker said.

“Statistically, my friend Gov. Kasich cannot.”

Walker left the race in October calling for the party to coalesce around an alternative to Trump. But the field remained huge until primary season began, and Cruz has only recently begun to win endorsements from more moderate Republicans including Jeb Bush and Lindsey Graham.

Emerson College polled 439 likely GOP primary voters between March 20 an 22. The poll has a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points.
