Walker hints at Cruz endorsement
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is strongly signaling he will endorse Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz before his home state’s primary next month.
Walker has said that he is waiting to endorse so it will have “maximum impact” on the April 5 primary.
{mosads}But in an interview Wednesday on the Charlie Sykes radio show that was first reported by BuzzFeed, Walker said only Cruz has a chance of stopping GOP front-runner Donald Trump, casting doubt on John Kasich’s odds.
“If you’re someone who is uneasy with the front-runner, right now there’s really only one candidate — if you’re just looking at the numbers objectively — Sen. Cruz, Ted Cruz is the only one who’s got a chance other than Donald Trump to win the nomination,” Walker said. “Statistically, my friend Gov. Kasich cannot.”
When Walker ended his own bid for president back in October, he pleaded with other candidates to follow him out so the party could unite around a challenger to Trump.
Even if Kasich wins all the remaining delegates outstanding, he would fall short of the 1,237 needed to win the nomination. Cruz would need to win more than 85 percent of the remaining delegates, which is highly unlikely.
Both are trying to block Trump from winning the nomination outright, hoping to force a contested convention.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush endorsed Cruz on Wednesday, joining Rick Perry and Carly Fiorina as former White House candidates who now support the Texas senator’s bid.
Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have endorsed Trump.
No former GOP contenders have endorsed Kasich so far.
