Underwood, Paisley blame Swift for Senate flip

Country music stars Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley say they have a theory as to why the Democrats lost control of the Senate: Taylor Swift.

The entertainers co-hosted the 48th annual Country Music Association Awards on ABC on Wednesday, when they quipped about Swift’s recent flip from country music songstress to pop music chart topper.

Paisley jested that a condition called “Postpartum Taylor Swift Disorder” had “hit Nashville the hardest.”

“Why isn’t our government doing something about this?” the “River Bank” singer asked.

{mosads}Paisley then alluded to a controversial statement rapper Kanye West made in 2005. “I’ll be the first one to say it,” Paisley declared, “President Obama does not care about Postpartum Taylor Swift Disorder.” During a Hurricane Katrina fundraiser, West told the audience that then-President George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people.”

Underwood appeared to agree with Paisley’s Taylor Swift assessment during the opening monologue shtick. “I’m pretty sure that’s why the Democrats lost the Senate,” she said, adding to huge laughs from the crowd.

It’s not the first time that the “Shake it Off” singer has made headlines during the midterm elections. Outgoing Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) said in remarks last week that Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst was “as good looking as Taylor Swift.” Ernst said in an interview that she was “very offended” by the comment, for which Harkin later apologized. Ernst defeated her opponent, Rep. Bruce Braley (D), in the Tuesday election.
