WATCH: Dems say Trump will look like he has something to hide if he avoids Mueller interview
Democratic senators say that if President Trump doesn’t agree to an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, it will look like he’s trying to hide something.
“If the president fails to appear for the interview it’s an indication that he has something to hide,” Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Tuesday.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) echoed his colleague. “I think the American people are going to ask, what is he hiding?” he said.
“Using [President Trump’s] own words, if you have nothing to hide, if you are innocent, then you should answer questions, sit down and answer questions,” Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) added.
Blumenthal also said if Trump refuses to interview with Mueller, he should be subpoenaed.
GOP Sen. John Kennedy (La.) questioned whether that’s possible.
“I don’t know whether he can be subpoenaed or what. I mean, you have the right in America not to testify, all things being equal; it’s called the Fifth Amendment,” Kennedy said.
The senators spoke after The New York Times reported that some Trump advisers are suggesting he not interview with Mueller.
