Watch: Rubio holds press conference with Costa Rican president
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Costa Rica Tuesday, where he gave remarks to the press alongside Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chavez.
Rubio’s travel through Central America and the Caribbean in his first major trip at the helm of the State Department has been largely focused on curbing illegal immigration into the U.S. and addressing drug trafficking. He has also recently visited Panama and El Salvador and is slated to also make a trip to the Dominican Republic.
His trip to Costa Rica’s southern neighbor came as President Trump has proposed a plan for the U.S. to regain control of the Panama Canal. Panama’s government, however, has pushed back on the efforts.
The presser cames as the Trump administration has seemingly moved to merge the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The event in San Jose, Costa Rica, was scheduled to begin at 11:50 a.m. EST.
