Biden highlights Earth Day: Watch live

In honor of Earth Day, President Biden is announcing $7 billion in grants for solar energy projects serving lower and middle income communities at an event Monday in northern Virginia.

The program is meant to ease the high startup costs for residential solar. That could help create a lower-cost, more reliable electric grid than the present fossil-fuel heavy system, in addition to reducing the relative climate impact of power generation, the administration said.

Biden is also expected to share plans to create 2,000 jobs in the American Climate Corps, a federal program based on the New Deal policies of President Franklin Roosevelt. The event’s location is itself a nod to the earlier president: Prince William Forest Park was created in 1936 through the work of the Roosevelt administration’s Civilian Conservation Corps.

Biden is scheduled to speak at 2:15 p.m. EDT.
