Harris unveils nursing home care standards: Watch live

Vice President Harris will meet Monday with care workers for a roundtable discussion in La Crosse, Wis., following an announcement of national standards for nursing home staffing.

Until now, guidelines for staffing have been open to interpretation, putting quality of life and access to medical treatment for many residents at risk.

The new rules, in contrast, are exact. When fully implemented, residents at care facilities receiving federal funds should get no less than 3.48 hours of care daily.

At least 33 minutes should be from a registered nurse, and at least 2 hours and 27 minutes can come from a nurse aide. Each nursing home is to have a registered nurse on staff 24 hours per day.

To meet the new minimums, most locations will need to hire more staff, and nursing home owners have objected to the changes.

The event is scheduled to start at 1:50 p.m. EDT.
