Volkswagen is recalling more than 261,000 vehicles over a pump problem that was linked to potential gas leaks that could spark fires.

According to documents posted Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall includes some Audi A3s and Volkswagen Golfs and Golf GTIs from the 2015 through 2020 model years. Golf SportWagens from model years 2015 through 2017 and 2019 and 2020 Volkswagen Jettas are also included, according to documents.

Each of the models included in the recall has front-wheel drive. Vehicles with all-wheel drive and vehicles that do not have the specific pump are not affected.

The documents said the issue with the suction jet pump seal inside the fuel tank can lead to fuel flowing into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system, which can result in it possibly leaking out of the charcoal canister.

The documents noted that the fuel leak “in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire” in affected vehicles. The dealers will replace the suction pump for free in affected vehicles and notification letters will be sent to owners on April 12.

The Associated Press noted that Volkswagen issued a recall for 110,000 vehicles for the same problem in 2016. U.S. safety regulators had opened an investigation into the issue after getting 79 complaints of fuel leaks from owners, according to AP.
