New regs for Wednesday: Relief from trucking vision rules

Truckers, veterans and visitors to the U.S. will all have something to look for in Wednesday’s issue of the Federal Register.

Here’s what’s on the way:

Transportation:

The Transportation Department wants to change the eligibility requirements for a program that allows some interstate truckers and bus drivers to operate without meeting eyesight standards.

{mosads}The agency said in its proposed rule change that the new criteria “will continue to ensure a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level of safety maintained under the existing criteria.” 

Borders:

The Treasury Department and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are issuing a joint rule expanding the definition of family members residing in one household for the purposes of customs forms. 

The new definition would allow families to declare foster children, half-siblings, non-married committed couples and other “domestic relationships” on the same form.

The change will allow more families to file a single form, the agencies said.

Veterans:

The Department of Veterans Affairs is trying to change its rules on vets’ entitlement to money for burials. 

The new rules would help the agency automate payments to surviving spouses, among other features.

Finance:

The Federal Reserve Board is adopting a regulation on some trades.

The changes are part of the Fed’s effort to limit market risk and help “serve as a bridge” until new rules become effective for all banks, it said.

Chemicals:

The Environmental Protection Agency is setting limits for the amount of the pesticide endothall that can be left as a residue on apples.

The agency is also declaring that it does not need to issue tolerance limits for a type of oil when used in pesticides. 

Mail:

The Postal Service is revising its mailing standards manual to reflect price changes and require new barcodes on all commercial packages. 

Fishing:

National fishing regulators are halting red snapper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico on July 11, reapportioning the allocation of 30,000 metric tons of Pacific whiting and closing an area in Maine to haddock fishing.
