Residents in Aledo, Texas, on Monday discovered racist flyers that promoted the “Great Sale of Slaves” one week after school officials disciplined some students who were promoting a “slave trade” of Black classmates on social media.
The Dallas Morning News reported that Aledo school district officials said a group of ninth grade students were disciplined for creating a Snapchat group called “Slave Trade” in which they spoke about buying Black students.
School officials did not specify how the students were disciplined, the Morning News reported.
Several members of the community who discovered the flyers cleaned the area, according to a resident.
During a school board meeting on Monday evening, one of the students targeted in the social media post, Chris Johnson, said, “If you think that this has affected you and your job, just imagine how we actually feel,” Johnson said, according to the newspaper. “This is what happened in our community because we didn’t listen to the people affected most. Now we’re all suffering for it.”
Johnson noted that he would accept an apology if there’s a change in behavior.
Aledo’s school district Superintendent Susan Bohn said at a meeting that the racist flyers do not reflect the values of the community.
“We strive every day to be better than the day before,” Bohn said.
