President Trump is expected to propose freezing fuel efficiency standards at 2020 levels, Bloomberg reports.

The proposed freeze would end the Obama-era initiative to cut down on carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles.

The draft proposal — created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) — outlines eight scenarios for replacing the old standards, two people familiar with the plan told Bloomberg.

Although the agencies will offer a number of proposals, they are expected to recommend the one that would freeze standards for six years starting in 2020, Bloomberg reported.

The administration is also considering whether to end California’s authority to set its own fuel efficiency standards that are more stringent than federal standards.

According to Bloomberg, the EPA is disputing that the two agencies are proposing a freeze.

“The agency is continuing to work with NHTSA to develop a joint proposed rule and is looking forward to the interagency process,” Liz Bowman, an EPA spokeswoman, told Bloomberg.
