Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to retire: reports

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring, multiple news outlets reported on Wednesday.

NBC News noted that the resignation gives President Joe Biden a “crucial opportunity to replace the liberal justice.”

CNN confirmed the resignation through a “well-placed source familiar with the matter.”

The network also reported that a formal announcement could come with Biden at the White House on Thursday.

“It has always been the decision of any Supreme Court Justice if and when they decide to retire, and how they want to announce it, and that remains the case today,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted. “We have no additional details or information to share from @WhiteHouse.”
