Mississippi’s attorney general on Thursday asked the Supreme Court to overrule Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that guarantees the right to abortion.
Attorney General Lynn Fitch (R) called the Supreme Court’s precedent on abortion “egregiously wrong” in the filing.
Referring to the cases Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Fitch wrote “they have proven hopelessly unworkable. They have inflicted profound damage. Decades of progress have overtaken them.”
The filing, which is made in defense of Mississippi’s ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, makes plain that the state’s position is “nothing in constitutional text, structure, history, or tradition supports a right to abortion.”
