House Oversight panel reissues subpoena for Trump’s accounting firm

The House Oversight and Reform Committee has reissued a subpoena for former President Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, according to a court filing released Tuesday.

House counsel Doug Letter said in the filing that the subpoena was issued Thursday. The subpoena is the latest effort by congressional investigators to get their hands on Trump’s financial records.

The Oversight panel first announced in December that it planned to reissue the subpoena. The committee is seeking eight years of records related to Trump and his businesses from the former president’s accountants, but the subpoena has been tied up in court over a lawsuit from Trump seeking to shield the documents from congressional staffers. 

Democrats have tried to get hold of Trump’s records for years, saying access to the forms will help form more stringent financial disclosure legislation to hold future administrations accountable.

The Supreme Court over the summer set back the subpoena effort after it ruled that lower courts had not sufficiently balanced the interests of both the executive and legislative branches. However, the court last month greenlighted a subpoena for the same material by Manhattan prosecutors, and District Attorney Cyrus Vance recently got hold of Trump’s tax returns. 

Congressional Democrats appear to be gearing up for months of legal battles to obtain Trump’s information. Letter’s filing included a proposed legal schedule that would see Trump’s first brief taking place on April 15, followed a month later by the Oversight panel’s response. Arguments would last until at least June.
