Accused Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse’s bail set at $2 million

A court commissioner on Monday set the bail for Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17-year-old accused of killing two people at a Kenosha, Wis., protest, at $2 million.

Rittenhouse made his first virtual court appearance in Wisconsin after being extradited from Illinois on Friday. He faces five felony charges and a misdemeanor for allegedly shooting and killing Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber at Aug. 25 protests.

Court Commissioner Loren Keating said the court believes the teenager is a flight risk.

“As such, the court is going to impose a $2 million cash bond, believing that is reasonable and necessary and sufficient at this juncture to secure the appearance of Mr. Rittenhouse,” he said.

The teenager’s attorney Mark Richards had requested a $750,000 bail and electronic monitoring. But the court instead accepted prosecutors’ ask for $2 million.

Rittenhouse’s legal team had unsuccessfully attempted to delay or stop the extradition process by alleging the criminal complaint was not signed by the necessary magistrate in the state.

John Huber, the father of Anthony Huber, argued for a higher bond during the hearing, saying militias and others who supported Rittenhouse would raise money for his bail.

“If you can double his cash bond, that’s what I’m for,” he said.

“Because there’s people out there raising money right now, making it their own fight, that it’s about gun rights,” Huber continued. “It’s not about gun rights. My son was killed. Another man was killed. They didn’t deserve to be killed.”

Rittenhouse’s next preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3.

The Antioch, Ill., teenager appeared at protests in Kenosha, Wis., over the police shooting of Jacob Blake, with an assault rifle on Aug. 25. In addition to the accusations of killing Huber and Rosenbaum that night, he is accused of wounding a third man.
