New regs for Monday: Mines, cars, railroads

Monday’s edition of the Federal Register delays new workplace safety rules for miners as well as sound requirements for cars.

Here’s what is happening:

Mines: The Department of Labor is delaying new workplace safety standards for miners.

The Labor Department’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) updated the rules for examining metal and non-metal mines in January on the last day of the Obama administration, but is now delaying the changes.

The rule will now go into effect on Oct. 2.

Railroads: The Department of Transportation (DOT) is requesting information from railroads.

The Transportation Department’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) issued a notice Friday requesting information about bridge safety.

The railroads have 60 days to respond.

Cars: The Department of Transportation is delaying new rules for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The Transportation Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued minimum sound requirements for these cars in December. They were scheduled to take effect Monday after an initial delay, but they will now be pushed back again until next month.
