New regs for Thursday: Babies, nuclear, chemicals

Thursday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new protections for babies, licensing requirements for nuclear facilities and chemical guidelines.

Here’s what is happening:

Nuclear: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is proposing new licensing requirements for certain nuclear sites.

The license renewal procedures would apply to “non-power reactors, testing facilities, and other production or utilization facilities,” the agency said Wednesday.

The public has 75 days to comment.

Babies: The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is moving forward with new safety standards for infant bathtubs.

The safety standards will “further reduce the risk of injury” resulting from the use of infant bathtubs, the agency said Wednesday.

The rule goes into effect on Oct. 2.

Chemicals: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is correcting a mistake in new guidelines it issued for evaluating chemical hazards.

The correction goes into effect immediately.

Retirement: The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board is considering new rules for death benefits.

The public has 30 days to comment.
