New regs for Wednesday: Prepaid cards, nuclear, water

Wednesday’s edition of the Federal Register contains new rules for prepaid cards and nuclear power plants.

Here’s what is happening:

Prepaid: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is looking to delay new rules for prepaid cards.

The prepaid card regulations issued last fall are scheduled to go into effect in October 2017, but the CFPB proposed Tuesday to delay the effective date until April 2018.

The public has 21 days to comment on the potential delay.

Water: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is moving forward with new ground water guidelines at nuclear power plants.

The NRC issued Tuesday new guidelines for measuring “abnormal discharges of radionuclides in ground water from the subsurface to the unrestricted area at commercial nuclear power plant sites.”

The guidelines go into effect immediately.

Nuclear: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is drafting new rules for nuclear power reactors that are being decommissioned.

The rules will “provide for an efficient decommissioning process” and “reduce the need for exemptions from existing regulations.”

The public has 90 days to comment.
