New regs for Monday: Trains, railroads, nuclear

Here’s what is happening:

Railroads: The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is delaying new safety rules for trains.

The agency required “commuter and intercity passenger railroads to develop and implement a system safety program” last August, but is delaying the implementation of the new standards.

The rules will now go into effect on March 21.

Trains: The FRA is also delaying safety standards for passenger equipment on trains.

These safety standards were proposed last December, but the FRA is reopening the comment period to give the public more time to consider the changes.

The public now has until March 21 to comment.

Environment: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is drafting new environmental guidelines.

The NRC’s guidance addresses how environmental reports should be prepared for the construction of a nuclear power plant.

The public has 60 days to comment.
