Eight people believed dead after two planes collide in Idaho

Eight people are believed to be dead after two planes collided over Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Lake, according to local authorities.

CNN reported Sunday evening that the crash, which occurred around 2:20 p.m. local time, is not believed to have left any survivors. Two bodies were recovered from the wreck before it sank into the lake, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Six more victims are believed to still be missing but presumed dead, according to the sheriff’s office, which said that group includes both adults and children. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the accident, CNN reported.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration told The Hill that the crash was being investigated by the agency jointly along side the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). 

One of the aircraft involved was a six-seat Cessna 206, according to the FAA; it was unclear what type of craft collided with it during the accident. Numerous witnesses were at the scene when it occurred, as the lake is a popular summer boating location.
