Electric Jeep SUV planned for early 2023 launch

Automaker Stellantis announced it plans to launch its electric Jeep SUV series in early 2023. 

In a statement on Tuesday, the automaker revealed images of the new model, saying it plans to continue “its global initiatives toward the full electrification of its SUV portfolio.” 

“This new fully electric Jeep vehicle will be launched early next year, expanding the brand’s reach and taking the next step to the achievement of Jeep brand’s vision of Zero Emission Freedom,” Stellantis said in a statement, adding that more information on the vehicle would be released in the coming months. 

Stellantis also said it plans to have more than 75 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and global annual BEV sales of 5 million vehicles by 2030.

The automaker also plans to increase battery capacity from 140 gigawatt-hours to approximately 400 gigawatt-hours during that time, according to the statement. 

Stellantis’s announcement comes as other major automakers, including General Motors (GM), Ford and Nissan, have announced plans to ramp up their electric vehicle (EV) investment in the United States. 

Nissan announced last month that it plans to build two electric vehicle manufactured plants in Mississippi, while GM unveiled a $7 billion investment in Michigan, which it said will create 4,000 new jobs at EV manufacturing sites. 

And Ford is reportedly planning to spend $10 billion to $20 billion over the next five to 10 years to shift its factories around the world to EV production.

According to The Associated Press, Stellantis said it made $15.2 million in sales in its first year after merging with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group.
