Former Nissan chairman Ghosn to remain in jail through Jan. 11

Former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn will be detained through at least Jan. 11 on charges of falsifying financial documents, The Associated Press reported Monday.

The Tokyo District Court reportedly approved a request from prosecutors to extend Ghosn’s detention by 10 days. The AP reported that it is common in Japan for suspects to be detained for months, or until their trial starts, out of concerns of evidence tampering.

{mosads}Prosecutors say they consider Ghosn a flight risk, the AP reported, making it unclear when he may be released on bail.

Nissan’s board voted last month to dismiss Ghosn and Representative Director Greg Kelly after authorities arrested the pair on claims that Ghosn was underreporting his salary by millions of dollars and using company assets for personal use with Kelly’s help.

Nissan said last month that it was conducting an internal investigation, spurred by a whistleblower report, into Ghosn’s financial practices.

The automaker said it has cooperated with the Japanese Public Prosecutor’s Office in its investigation into Ghosn’s and Kelly’s alleged misconduct.
