NYC bans cars from Central Park

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday that the city would ban cars from Central Park.

“Central Park goes car free in June. 24/7, 365 days a year — because parks are for people, not cars,” de Blasio tweeted.

The announcement comes shortly after the New York Daily News first reported the ban Friday.

Cars will no longer be allowed to drive on the streets in the park below 72nd St., where motorists are currently allowed to drive during certain hours of the day, according to the Daily News.

The ban won’t apply to the cross-town streets used by drivers to get across the city.

Cars are currently allowed to be on the Center Drive from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and on two other roads from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. on weekdays.

Automobiles had already been banned from the park above 72nd St.

De Blasio’s office declined to comment to the Daily News.
