Video shows airplane stowaway

Security video from the Kahului Airport on Maui, Hawaii shows a teenager who stowed away on a flight from San Jose last month, NBC News reports

The video shows 15-year-old Yahya Abdi falling out of the wheel well of a Boeing 767 that was being operated by Hawaiian Airlines, according to the report.

Abdi is seen wobbling on the tarmac of the Kahului Airport and talking to an airport employee. The teen was later taking to the hospital.

{mosads}Airport officials said in a statement that was provided to the network that the video lined up with initial reports about the stowaway.

“The teen appeared disoriented and was questioned by a worker near the plane who alerted security. TSA and the FBI were also contacted,” the airport statement said. “Surveillance video at Kahului Airport showed what appeared to be the boy exiting from the wheel well of a plane from San Jose, Calif., that had landed in Kahului, Maui, at about 10:30 a.m. The boy was treated by airport and county medics and then transported to a Maui hospital.”

Aviation observers expressed surprise that Abdi was able to survivie the cold air and lack of oxygen outside of commercial airplanes when they reach cruising altitudes of 30,000 feet of more.

The discovery of the teen’s successful stowaway attempt raised questions about airport perimeter security.

Lawmakers have called for a nationwide reassessment of U.S. and the Transportation Security Administration has come under fire for approving the San Jose airport weeks before the stowaway incident.
