Transportation sector gains 11,300 jobs in April
The transportation sector gained 11,300 jobs in April as the national unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent, according to statistics released by the Department of Labor on Friday.
The Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said there were 4,580,500 jobs in transportation in April, compared to 4,569,200 in March.
The jump was part of a 288,000 increase in overall jobs in April, the BLS said.
{mosads}The transportation sector with the highest employment increase was “truck transportation,” which had 1,401,500 jobs in April, compared to 1,394,700 in March.
The biggest drop in employment in the transportation sector took place in the airline industry, which lost 3,200 jobs last month. The category had 452,700 jobs in April, which was down from 455,900 in March.
The transit and ground passenger transportation industries lost 2,700 jobs in April, going from 453,900 in March to 451,200 last month.
Long-distance and freight rail companies gained 400 jobs, going from 233,200 in March to 233,600 last month.
