Dutch watchdog fines TikTok over lack of translated privacy statement
The Netherland’s privacy watchdog is fining TikTok nearly $900,000 for not offering a privacy statement in Dutch.
The country’s Data Protection Authority said in a statement that by not offering a translated policy, “TikTok failed to provide an adequate explanation of how the app collects, processes and uses personal data.”
The lack of a Dutch privacy statement is especially concerning for children, the regulatory agency said, who are the primary users of the short-form video app.
TikTok has filed an objection to the fine.
In a statement to The Hill, TikTok said that its privacy policy and a “shorter and more accessible version for our younger users, available in Dutch since July 2020, has been accepted by the Dutch Data Protection Authority as the solution to this issue.”
